چکیده

To the Editor: The excellent article on measures for controlling plague in Alghero, Sardinia, describes the procedures introduced by the Calabrian doctor Quinto Tiberio Angelerio (1532–1617) to combat an outbreak during 1582–1583 (1). The authors cite 2 works published by Angelerio relating to these events, Ectypa (1588) (2) and Epidemiologìa (1598) (3). To say that Epidemiologìa was written only in Spanish is a small error, however, because both works were written in Latin. Ectypa contains an appendix written in Catalan with the measures to take during an epidemic, whereas in Epidemiologìa, this appendix was written in Spanish. A third and posthumous edition, not cited in the article, was found recently in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (4). Epydem (5) was published in Naples in 1651 by Angelerio’s nephew. This work was written in Latin and did not contain appendices but did include a brief biography of Angelerio. The terms epidemic (Greek) and plague (Latin) were used ambiguously to refer to “maladies that came from abroad or afflicted us collectively.” The major aspect of Angelerio’s texts, especially Epidemiologìa (3), is that the term epidemiology was used here for the first time in a “treatise on the plague” in the sense of “how to protect yourself from it when it erupts.” The term was adopted by the Spanish physician Joaquín de Villalba (1752–1807) who, citing Angelerio, used it as the title for his work Epidemiología Española (6). This treatise gained wide circulation, and the term was espoused by various authors from the beginning of the 19th century onward. Villalba used it to compose a historical chronology of the epidemics in Spain, noting the type of disease and the place and year in which it had occurred; this was an initial approach to the concept of epidemiology, which coincided with the development of medical topographies and statistics applied to infectious diseases.

Draft Whole-Genome Sequence of a New Variant of Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor Strain Isolated from a Cholera Patient in Russia

Draft whole-genome sequencing of the Vibrio cholerae О1 El Tor clinical strain L3226, isolated in Moscow in 2010, was carried out. Various mutations in the virulence-associated mobile elements were determined in its genome that differentiated this strain from the reference V. cholerae О1 El Tor strain N16961.

Whole-Genome Sequencing of Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor Strains Isolated in Ukraine (2011) and Russia (2014)

Here, we present the draft whole-genome sequence of Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor strains 76 and M3265/80, isolated in Mariupol, Ukraine, and Moscow, Russia. The presence of various mutations detected in virulence-associated mobile elements indicates high genetic similarity of the strains reported here with new highly virulent variants of the cholera agent V. cholerae.

Rapid spread of Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor variant in Odisha, Eastern India, in 2008 and 2009.

The emergence and spread of Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor variant strains causing severe diarrhea has been witnessed worldwide in recent years. In the state of Odisha, India, the spread of the V. cholerae O1 El Tor variant strains was studied during outbreaks in 2008 and 2009. Analysis of 194 V. cholerae O1 Ogawa strains revealed that V. cholerae O1 El Tor variant strains are spreading gradually th...

Simultaneous Detection of Integrase and Antibiotic Resistance Genes within SXT Constin in Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor Strains Isolated from Iran Using Multiplex-PCR

Objective(s) Amongst the various antibiotic resistant elements in Vibrio. cholerae, SXT constin (SXT-C) is important. We were going to design a quick method for determination of antibiotic resistance gene pattern in SXT-C. Materials and Methods Ninety four V. cholerae O1El Tor isolates were used in this study. Antibiotic susceptibility testing, multiplex PCR amplification of SXT-C containing...

Identity of hemolysins produced by Vibrio cholerae non-O1 and V. cholerae O1, biotype El Tor.

Hemolysins purified from non-O1 Vibrio cholerae (non-O1 hemolysin) and a Vibrio cholerae O1, biotype El Tor (El Tor hemolysin) were investigated for their homology. The hemolysins were isolated from the culture supernatant fluids by ammonium sulfate precipitation and gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 columns. The purified hemolysins gave single bands with an identical mobility on conventional po...
